Simon and Garfunkel

Wednesday Morning 3 AmI thought it would be cool to name a few albums and artists that have had a massive influence on me over the years. Even though electronic music is my thing, I’m also a songwriter foremost. I always try and write songs with a strong concept behind them, unless I’m being self indulgent and just messing around.

Anyway, first up is Wednesday Morning 3 AM. This is a song writing master-class in this respect. I’ve done a couple of Simon and Garfunkel covers and given them the electro treatment but I’ll probably get shot by Paul Simon’s record company if I post them on here.

These songs just kind of wash over you really and the pleasant melodies are sometimes at odds with the bitingly satirical lyrics. This is something that few songwriters and lyricists can pull-off convincingly. I’ve always loved the idea of someone happily humming along to a song being blissfully unaware that it is about a massacre, heroin, or a hooker or something.

This is about as pure as song writing gets really. This album was released in 1964 and I wonder if we will be listening to Dizzy Rascal in 40 odd years…
