iTunesI just found out that the Beatles back-catalogue will be available on iTunes for the first time. This saddens me because iTunes is like a huge meat grinder and everything gets stuffed in, chopped up and spewed out in little bite-sized chunks the other end to feed the bloated corporate Apple machine. iTunes is the music store for people that don’t really like music.

This is fine for artist like me that need every second of exposure but it doesn’t work for some artists like Pink Floyd. For me, when I used to by albums (I can’t remember the last time I purchased any new music), I felt I was buying a concept and vision as well as 10 or more songs. You just don’t get this with iTunes because it just sits there on your ipod like a ring tone. The creative idea of ‘The Album’ will soon be a thing of the past.

Most modern music is disposable and that fits the iTunes model perfectly. This in turn kills creativity. I haven’t got a problem with Apple or iTunes but I feel uncomfortable with the way that iTunes has become the mainstream method of buying music when it is such a dull and sterile experience.

This irony is almost too much to bear after the high profile legal battle between Apple computers and the Beatles Apple music corp. I have to admit, as much as it pains me to say, I’m with Pink Floyd on this one..
